Usually the end of the year is a time to retrospect and reminiscence. It’s no different in my case too as 2014 rolled by I spent a lot of time pondering over what worked and what didn’t, what I did right and what I want to do differently in 2015 for the blog. One thing that kept coming back again and again was ‘Food’. Nope, don’t jump to conclusions yet…hear me out first…..
Flashback to circa 2003 when I was pregnant with Monkey #1. I was part of an online parenting forum where would be mothers from all over the world who were due the same month would share their hopes and expectations about their pregnancies and lives in general. After the birth of our babies it became a very active parenting support group and evolved into a lifestyle support group over the next 6 years before it lost steam. We shared everything from parenting tips, recipes, home talks, and even traveling tips.
B and I love food, both to eat and to cook. We enjoy cooking, experimenting with different cuisines, and cook almost everyday. So naturally I used to share my recipes over at the parenting board and would most often get the, “Why don’t you start a cooking blog?” question. Those were my cooking heydays, frankly ever since I started this blog my cooking craze has dulled a bit. I still love to cook and try new recipes but am not crazy about trying new stuff every night like I used to back in the day. During those days I’ve had serious discussions with B about starting a cooking blog but I always felt it was not my thing as I was not an exact cook. You see, I think of myself as more of a “go by the feel” cook, one that does not stick to exact measurements and adjusts her spices and measurements by the look and taste of the dish. So it is very hard for me to keep track of how much of what I’ve used in a recipe. And to publish and blog about a dish with vague measurements would not just work, or would it?
Anyways……back to recent times…..2 fussy eaters later…..actually one very fussy little one with a coconut allergy to top it off (not a big deal normally but Kerala cuisine, the part of India where we are from, relies heavily on coconut) we are back to actively experimenting with new recipes and cuisines. I have posted a few of these on the WUHS Instagram and Facebook pages and have received very encouraging responses, which has set the food blogging ball rolling again in my mind. What do you guys think about adding a few foodie posts to the mix? Again at this point I’m not sure if I’m 100% ready to jot down the exact measurements of my recipes yet…..only toying with the idea at this stage. Got to admit that a part of me is scared about this slight change in focus for the blog after 3 years of solely concentrating in the home decor/DIY niche but then I remind myself of the above George Shinn quote.
What else is in store for the blog in 2015?
– A new look and branding possibly soon.
– A program of appreciation for all you readers who subscribe via email; could be a monthly newsletter with special tips or downloadable products.
– A more personal approach to posts. One of the toughest parts of blogging for me is sharing more of me out here. Being an introvert by nature it just doesn’t come as easily to me as to others.
– More collaborative projects with other bloggers.
– Bring back some of the series posts like Scouting Craigslist, Window Shopping Friday, Flower Power, and Same Look 4 Less.
Y’all excited for a rocking 2015? What more would you like to see around here?
