What is not to love about kitchens with islands? Islands add much needed counter space and extra room for conversation, doing homework, guests to sit around and chitchat while you are prepping in the kitchen. Every kitchen island needs lighting both for function and style. That’s were pendant lights come in. You can have them in 3s, 2s, or even just 1. Either way kitchen pendants make a statement.
But how many pendants do you need? Unfortunately there is no magic number. It all depends on the size of the island and the light fixture. The key is the proportion of the light/lights to the island and the kitchen size, as you can see in the pics below.
The combo of three small pendants is the most common style. All pics courtesy Houzz.
In the next pic too the 3 combo works even though the lights are bigger because the island is longer. On a side note, lately I’ve been seeing a lot of industrial lighting in the kitchen and totally love the look.
Did you notice, both the rooms were done by the same designer?
If you have only 2 outlets (like us, more on that here) no worries. Two works great too.
Or here;
If you plan to go with just one pendant then make sure to pick a slightly larger one that can stand on its own like this.
As you can see in these pics you can also play around with the style of the pendants. The first two were more masculine while the next two had a feminine touch. Here is big statement making feminine one.
Instead of lining them up in a straight line you could also stagger them like they did in this Chicago home designed by award winning Normandy Designer Stephanie Bryant.
How many lights do you have above your kitchen island? Are you in the 3, 2, or 1 club?
