Seeing Red

Yes, the pun is intentional. Will tell you why in a bit. First feast your eyes on my new red beauty. Had to post about it before I could even get it inside! :)

painting bamboo furniture

Wondering why you never saw this console table before? This is a fairly new piece of furniture (actually it has popped up once or twice on the breakfast table reveal post), one I bought with my birthday gift $. Bamboo furniture to me is pure nostalgia. Back from where I am from bamboo is easily available and as a result cane furniture is all too common.

PS: If you are freaking out like B on the red then take my word for it, it all makes sense in the big picture.

When I picked it up in a hurry during one of my umpteen trips to Ross ($50) I had no plans of painting it. Let alone keeping it. All I knew was that I wanted to use it as a plant stand in our breakfast idea. I brought it home and B promptly voiced his disapproval. We decided to ‘live with it’ for a few days and see whether it would grow on us. No surprise there, it did! The thought of painting it slowly evolved once we finished the breakfast room dining table. The dark walnut finish, the dark chairs, the floor, and then this table was way too much.

I know you’re thinking, “Yeah…yeah….yeah… it is just another spray paint project”. Agreed but one that taught me a valuable lesson.

When spray painting furniture always use a primer first and only then do an enamel coat. The “Paint + Primer” spray paint can just does not cut it unless you want to paint the piece white or black!

I realized this after emptying almost 1.5 cans of Rustoleum Apple Red Paint + Primer. Not only did the paint blotch up in a few places it also was just not bright enough. You know that gloss apple red color?

I had to sand down the blotched up areas and coat them in white primer twice. I also ended up priming the entire piece as I wanted the color to be even. So half a can of Rustoleum White Paint + Primer (that is the only primer I had on hand) and 3 cans of Rustoleum Apple Red Paint + Primer later we are here!

Can’t wait to move it inside and style! Fingers crossed, hope to have the reveal by next week.

I’ve read many posts online both for and against painting furniture, especially bamboo furniture. I think most of the bamboo pieces you see now a days in the US have a dated feel. Yet because of their interesting lines they are very sculptural and can make quite a strong statement when used cleverly. Painting them in a bright fun color instantly updates them and is like tacking a giant “Hey, Look at me” sign on them.

Do you have bamboo furniture in your home? Are you for or against leaving it in its original stain? Have you tried spray painting furniture before?

Rug Rules

Rugs are great accent pieces for any room. They can liven up a room with their pattern or act as a subtle statement grounding all the furniture. Do you get confused on what size of rugs to use? I used to until I discovered these so called rules.

Rule # 1 (and the one I’m gonna be talking about today) : Size Matters!

Whether you choose a wool, cotton, natural fiber, or synthetic rug the size is the key. The most common mistake people make is choosing a rug that is too small. In the pic below doesn’t the rug look like it is floating in the room?

too small rug

Pic Courtsey: Apartment Therapy

There are two ways you can work this issue.

  • Pick a rug large enough to fit all the furniture legs on it.
right size rug for the room

Pic Courtesy: West Elm

  • Or you could choose a size where the front feet of the furniture is anchored on the rug.
Correct size for a rug

Either way by anchoring the legs the rugs ground the room.

  • As you can see in my living room pic the second case also works even if the front legs of the couch are not on the rug as long as the size of the rug is proportional to that of the room.

For dining rooms too pay very close attention to the size. Here’s a big no no.

  • The rule for dining tables is, the legs of all the chairs should remain on the rug when they are pulled out.

When you think about it, it is sound advice. When you are at the table you wouldn’t want your chair to be wobbly as the the hind legs are off the rug.

Large rugs for large rooms can become pretty expensive. An alternative is to get your big box store to custom bind  a piece of carpet of your choice in the size you want. That is what we did for our family room.

We chose a shag carpet from Home Depot had them cut and bound it to size. Way cheaper than buying a real rug this size.

You guys have any rug tips?

Look Who’s Here!

If you remember my last year’s To Do List you would know that the breakfast room was way down on the list of priorities. However 2013 brought in a sequence of events that set the ball rolling on this room. First the large round table find on Craigslist, then the chairs to go with it again from Craigslist, my pendant snafu, and then refinishing the table……..One thing turned to another and now we have a new rug!

Whats Ur Home Story: Round Jute Rug

The awesome Pottery Barn Jute rug knockoff from Overstock.com. We’ve had it for a week now and it already feels like it’s meant to be. When I bought it Overstock had a 10% off sale. I also found a deal online for 10% off & free shipping for new Overstock accounts. So the 8 ft rug ended up costing us $153.

Along with this new find came a slew of projects like this mirror scored from our local Facebook yard sale group. If you haven’t checked out the ones in your community, you must. These groups are just like Craigslist but without the ‘buying from a stranger’ aspect. Usually the seller and buyer would have a friend/neighbor or a friend’s friend in common as it is all happening within the community.

Any ideas on what I’m gonna do with it?

Another project that is also underway is the plate wall! Yay! After almost 18 months of collecting I finally have what I think is the right amount of plates to start my masterpiece!

Plate hangers for the wall

There is even a spray paint project! Yeah..had to be, right? ;)

Actually I was supposed to do the reveal this week but the plate hanging and spray painting Gods weren’t in my favor. So hopefully will be able to wrap all these up next week.

Are you guys working on any projects now?

The Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

A strawberry pot succulent planter.

Whats Ur Home Story: strawberry pot succulent planter, mother's day gift

This was gift for a dear friend, who loves everything peacock. The accent colors in her home are of course blue, green, and jewel tones.

The top features handmade polymer clay benches by yours truly.

Whats Ur Home Story: strawberry pot succulent planter

It all started out with a strawberry pot that I found at our local Goodwill back in the middle of winter. Enter spray paints; Rustoluem white primer, Krylon Silver, Rustoleum Gold (all of which I already had), Rustoleum Seaside, and Rustoleum Eden.

Whats Ur Home Story: How to make a strawberry pot succulent planter

I didn’t wait for the paint to dry as I did the layers coz I wanted a blended in look. Like last time I used garden soil mixed with some sand and succulents from Home Depot.

Whats Ur Home Story: How to make a strawberry pot succulent planter

The trick to working with a strawberry pot is to plant in the openings as you go. That is, don’t try to fill the whole pot up with soil and then try to squeeze the plants into the opening. I tried it, not good at all. Had to pour out the soil and restart.

The branches are from my fall project. The bird nest is from Micheals. I had bought it as a set of two when I made my moss terrarium. The polymer clay was from a key chain project that my son and I did 2 years ago. The decorative stones, I already had.

While I was at it I also made a candy cane and lollipop with the left over polymer clay.

One more shot of the top;

And the full shot……again. ;)

As you might have guessed I had a blast making it. Now I need to make one for myself! I know a lot of you are succulent lovers. Any plans of making a planter?

Window Shopping Geometric Patterns

No, I didn’t go looking for geometric decor specifically. It looks like that is sort of my thing nowadays. I was going through the pics on my phone and all these finds from different stores popped up. See for yourself.

At TJ Maxx found this Ballard Design Sacha Mirror knockoff for $70. 4 of these hung side by side as a giant square will fill up any large wall and make an equally big statement.

You guys already know I fall head over heels for any Moroccan trellis patterns. So no big surprise here;

But the price for this beauty should come as a surprise, $70. You are thinking that’s a bit high? Wait, there’s more. I spotted it at Micheals where you literally get a 50% off coupon every other week, which will bring the tab down to $35!

Speaking of mirrors, aren’t these mirrored hurricanes (from Ross) gorgeous?

At Ross I also spotted these metal/glass drum side tables.

Now, for my favorite find! Another Moroccan Trellis design. This time though I really wished blue was an accent color in my house. How can you say no to such a pretty rug?

Found this treasure at Tuesday Morning for $300 for a 7.6 ft x 9 ft. It seems the original retailer price for it was $800!

Do you have a soft corner for geometric patterns too? How have you incorporated them in your decor?

More Yard Talk

Thought I would do a quickie update on rest of the yard. Nothing major, just happy to see most of the plants sprouting back to life.

In the side yard the knockout roses and black eyed susans are back in business.

But I think I may have lost the crepe myrtle. Not sure, I’m giving it some more weeks before I dig up the nursery tag to verify the plant guarantee. The other crepe myrtles around the house already have fresh new leaves.

The hydrangeas under the back are coming back to life while the Encore azelaes in the side yard bed look as sick as ever.

The one up close is actually blooming but that is how they look till June. Strange isn’t it? They start sprouting new leaves late May and bloom like crazy in late July and September!

The big planter on the deck too is full of life. I just added a few annuals for some color.

More good news in the form of the dinner plate hibiscus. There are new shoots on the bottom! Yay!

But we also have our first causality this year! :( Any guesses as to what it is? While you mull it over look who has been visiting us?

DSC_0378-2

That’s the mama robin busy hatching her eggs!

Ok, now back to my causality. It is my beloved water lily! Looks like after 2yrs I might  have to get a new one. I’m giving it a few more weeks to see if any new growth appears. If not then it is time for goodbyes. Were you lucky this year gardenwise? Have you lost a favorite plant?
